Origin of the group name

The group name is inspired by a famous indian movie 3 Idiots, we are three girls from different backgrounds and all of us love this movie. We believe a good collaboration is not about the intelligence of the individual but how to get the individuals work together.

A collaborative team is the interaction of involving people work together by sharing opinions and knowledge. To build up mutual trust, enhance creativity and impact positively on the quality of working life for virtual team members become familiarity, honesty and full participation harness the collective expertise of the team. Exercise A1 and A2 reveal two completely different trust management types, one is characterized by low levels of trust while the other is high-trust work environment.

-Exercise A1 presentation/product tended to be marketable

Low trust
The management types, the supervisor instruct the rest of the team on what is the next direction to proceed with the script writing process.” and “No team member is allowed to talk without the permission to speak from the supervisor.” This means the team members of this company can only receive information or idea from one supervisor. What’s more, this information or idea will be filtered by supervisor firstly. Poor and indirect communication creates suspicion and information loss.

Lack of creativity
Because of the existing of the supervisor role and the bureaucratic reporting and feedback system, group members are not motivated for brainstorming. Especially due to the criticism every time after speaking, group members are less willing to speak out their own idea and thoughts. It seems the supervisor is the only one who can make decisions.

Low teamwork spirit
The subordinates never know what next direction that they are going to involve. They feel difficulty to achieve the group’s goal with ambiguous vision.  Group members not allowed laughing during working hours, everyone just focuses on his/her own responsibility without interaction, information is passed to team members strictly on a need to know basis, team environment eventually becomes silence with low creativity, since subordinates can’t develop themselves by giving the opportunities to contribute and build on ideas from the team. Furthermore, the leader decides to present individually that may not be able to reflect the team effectively attract audiences.

Assume the above aspects in low level status that cause the team subordinates lack of autonomy, while a team leader has high level of responsibility to lead the team by job allocation and dedication. We can find the advantages of centralization of authority in leadership style. Personal leadership not only facilitates a quick action by his/her owns decision making, without spending more time to vote for majority, but also improves the quality of work that letting subordinates to follow the standardized procedures in a better supervisory manner. As a result, a group could have better coordination among various operations because of direct control and supervision are facilitated to eliminate likelihood of conflict of authority and duplication of work. Indeed, a leader who should have clear mission so as to make use of what capabilities and resources that he/she is given for the team to implement the project successfully. By adopted Ladder of inference, being a good leader, who should avoid bias and selective manner when driving the team members to get through the project, instead, to provide evidence or state out what solid experiences that he/she has come across previously. Try not to frustrate the subordinates improperly, as they further not willing to devote themselves for the team or propose the idea just want to cater the leader’s thought as their personal goals.

-Exercise A2 presentation/product tended to be creative

High trust
“Everyone must have the freedom to communicate with everyone.” When employee knows they have the right and the opportunity to communicate with colleagues and boss exactly, they can receive the feeling of supportive and comfortable and thus been motivated from company.

High creativity
Each group member has the equal rights to speak out, to challenge and to be involved in final dictions. In this kind of democratic atmosphere, group members showed their great activity and motivation in brainstorming. After the collision of thought, it was the best idea that decided the final decision.

High teamwork spirit
There is high trust in group goals among all team members. Everyone has freedom to communicate with each other to generate different ideas as possible.  They are encouraged to bring out their own ideas via the brainstorming, not only actively and openly share their knowledge and ideas around the whole team, but also accept the criticism from others when proposing the ideas. Letting each member to have high participation by greater clarity in expressing ideas through group discussion can help developing of team goals with creativity.

Seems case A2 is most likely under decentralization management, as there is no leader to lead the group. Hence, it may cause of disadvantages in lacking of co-operation and coordination. Meanwhile, decision making becomes time consuming, everyone just believes his/her own decision is the best, rather than accepts or compromises the final decision from different points of view. They eventually need taking time to vote for majority. In addition, individual competition among group members by increasing conflicts, or even a small peer group dominates the project without getting others' acceptance.  There is costly duplication of work in such activities, processes and outcomes; those may impact economy of scale. Especially, when the organization is still finding a new market to be developed and penetrated or new products to be launched, decentralization is not always a good strategy to adopt from the very first beginning. Which just like a new product is lacking the assessment reviewed by hierarchy managerial levels, the risks of getting mistake become higher or even the new product that can prove to be costly, however, group members should not only focus how creative on their product design, they ought to arrange job allocation to complete the certain parts piece by pice, then come up with a whole by getting the synergy effect.

Conclusion

Successful teams are characterized by a team spirit based around trust, mutual respect that bringing people together work effectively as a team or make appropriates decisions. It also can help improve participants’ confidence, attitudes, motivation and personal satisfaction. To streamline team forces by taking pooling experience and expertise to achieve goal in more efficient use of resources.

In applying the cases of A1 & A2 to make comparison between their leadership styles, there is no absolute way to define which one is better. As long as depending on how the leader manages his/her team to work under different circumstances, in fact, each leader upholds his/her own leadership style that must be existing pros and cons situations.

  1. I really like this analysis. This group's point of view is there is no absolute answer of under which type of context would be better. This group points out the fact that the effectiveness of the group context depends on the leadership. I do agree that different styles of group context match to different styles of people. Some people who are more obedient and less aggressive will be more comfortable to be with a more strict team leader. For more aggressive people and who prefer a more free style will be more effective in a free group context without a group leader. This will greatly enhanced the effectiveness of the group.
However, I wonder if Exercise A1 could deliver a marketable outcome. A discussion outcome is marketable or not greatly depends on the creativity of the group. With the strict group leader, the creativity is greatly hindered. The outcome developed under such pressurised environment probably won't be an innovative one and I think a non-innovative product won't be marketable. So I think for exercise A1, we can talk more about the how strict the leader is and how the strictness of the group rules affect the outcome of the group discussion.

  2. Sorry to express that I don’t like the background color of this blog. White color in background with grey words make me feeling sleepy. Besides, the font and its size are not consistency. Some words and bigger while some of them are smaller. I first assume that there is any implied meaning among them. However, I can’t reach it eventually. Then I think the reason is that the blog is written by different people and they didn’t compromise about the font finally.

To the content, the blog said case 2 is most likely decentralization. I do wonder if it correct. For me, decentralization is the process or redistributing or dispersing functions, powers, people or things away from a central location or authority. Every component and process are clear. The function and contribution of each part is well classification. Every party knows what to do and how to do. However, it is not the case in the blog. Case 2 is just a process of development a new product. Simply speaking, brain-storming is not decentralization. Moreover, in reality, economies of scale which is mentioned in the blog has never been applied in the R & D process as it is impossible to estimate the cost.

  3. 1, First, regardless of the content of the article, I see a perfect collaboration of Renee, Kimmy and Effie's. You made this article looks like a one person completion. I think you must pay the considerable time and effort to coordinate such a result.
2, A very clear structure of analysis, let me have a more comprehensive understanding of the "Teamwork = Creativity + Trust" equation, especially the titles of each section really guide me a lot.
3, Hope to see more analysis about trust and innovation combined with the practice. Many description seem come from materials that professor supporting. I recommend this article from MIND TOOL website: http://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/building-trust-team.htm
It provides many specific methods on how to build trust in the team. For example "Lead by Example". Hope this can help.

  4. First of all, the use of the equation "Teamwork = Creativity + Trust" as title makes the argument very clear. Audience can easily get the stance of this blog entry.

I agree that in the situation of exercise A1, it is in low trust, low team spirit and therefore lack of creativity. In this case, we have a competent leader and if we want the team to become more innovative, what he can do is to encourage creative thinking in the team. The following article helps a team leader to encourage creative thinking.

    http://www.marketingdonut.co.uk/marketing/marketing-strategy/marketing-recruitment-and-management/ten-ways-to-encourage-creative-thinking

The most important here is “be supportive”. The team leader has to support the team members so as to encourage more creative ideas to come out from the team.

The conclusion that it is depends on how the leader manages the team is very true in all situation; creativity would not come if the team leader try doesn’t support it at all.

  5. I can't resist thinking of your team logo when reading your articles. Rancho is definitely the best leader you gals have described - he is able to build team spirit with mutual trust and respect, he is also able to improve participants’ confidence, attitudes, motivation and personal satisfaction.

When I compare the movie and the exercises, movie's situation is more like exercise 2 where all people (the 3 idiots) are free to talk, to make comments, and they make great team spirit. The only difference is that Rancho is the leader (in my opinion) whereas there are none in exercise two. In my opinion, I still prefer having a leader in any of the situations, who is able to guide people to reach a consensus. A leader can makes our life easier. Imagine dozens of people talking their own ideas and each persuading others to accept as in exercise 2, leader would be the one who have to organize the unorganized situation. I don't judge whether the leader has the perfect leadership style that fits the situation or not, at least, a leader can/is forced to make a conclusion for us.

  6. You know what? I was going to use your team name as my team name because I looove this movie. I mean I appreciate those who love the spirit of idiots. So I deem you guys insightful. LOL…
OK, return to the subject. I think you should add more information of your group exercises to let the readers know about your whole process in doing the exercise such as brief introduction or simple scripts.
Besides, you directly divided your blog into two parts which is straight but also kind of simple. I guess you might want to make it more like a comparison between 2 cases. I see your point. But unfortunately, this kind of comparison will make your arguments look like not strong since no connection is seen in your blog, although I like your team spirit very much. I think this is just not a simple right or wrong question. You guys need more detailed analysis on how these situations work.

  8. Hi this is 53820292. I very appreciate your team's view, althouth it's contrary to our group's opinions. Our group think that exercise A1 may be more autocratic and exercise A2 environment are more equal and free to communicate. While your group points out that exercise 2 may has disadvantages such as lack of co-operation and coordination, and exercise 1 also has it's advantages. Thanks for your sharing, it give me another (a totally different )way to reflect on this two exercises that I never thought before. And I also agree with your conclusion, there is no absolute way to define which one is better. Your article reminds me that we need to use divergent thinking to think about these exercises deeply. Thanks again for your group's sharing.
